Subscription Games: November 2019

The Epic Games Store has a few older freebies from Devolver Digital’s library, while Sony serves up a highly-regarded Souls-like and Microsoft provides… a 15-year-old Star Wars game?

Playstation Plus (available until 3 December)

Nioh (MA15): “Embrace every defeat as a step along the path to victory. Only in death will you find the way of the samurai.” With a sequel in the works, the original Team Ninja Dark Souls-alike heads to PS Plus. Originally released on the PS3, the remaster has a Metacritic score of 88.

Outlast 2 (R18): A murder investigation leads you to a darkness so deep no-one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do. A well-received horror title, the PS4 version has lower Metacritic scores than the other ports of the game.

Xbox Games With Gold

Friday The 13th: The Game (R18): A multiplayer experience where a group of players must evade and escape from one player, playing as the lumbering, murderous Jason Vorhees. Was a freebie on PlayStation Plus in 2018, and it does work, but not really my bag personally. Free until 15 November.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter (M): “Play as the great detective and track down evil in the darkest corners of London and the human soul…” An adventure title with an emphasis on story and puzzles. Reviews are fair to middling but leaning positive. Free until 30 November.

Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter (PG): A re-release of the original Xbox space combat title- not remastered or anything, just made compatible with the Xbox One. Available until 15 November.

Epic Games Store

Ruiner (MA15). Top-down twin-stick shooter with slick presentation and a cyberpunk theme. Free until November 15.

Nuclear Throne (PG): A roguelike top-down shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world. Hardly a new game in any sense (the game had a PlayStation Vita port, for example) but well-liked. Free until November 15.

The Messenger (PG): Pixel-art platformer as a ninja ventures through a cursed village to ensure his clan’s survival. Free from November 15 to November 22.
